Location & Nearby Attractions

Atupa is an inland village set back approximately 500m from the sea and which gently rises on the lower slopes of one of Rarotonga’s mountains. The road – Ara Metua – in Atupa runs alongside the airport runway and RHV is located on a small, rising cul-de-sac that serves about half a dozen local houses. RHV faces north and is able to take advantage of the sun all day. On the east and west sides are shady trees and the lush mountains can be seen to the south.

There are several activities within easy reach of RHV. Along the Ara Metua, about 750m to the west is is one of Raro’s best beaches – a glorious, sandy beach with public facilities, shade, and the legendary Black Rock. Across the road from this beach is the Rarotonga Golf Club. Visitors are welcome to try their hand at a round on the course, that is notoriously difficult due to the masts – and their guy wires – dotted across the greens. Approximately 100m along the road to the east from RHV is a small dairy for some basic supplies, which is open from 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week.

The Ara Metua to the right from RHV heads towards town and passes the start of the cross-island walk. The vibrant Punanga Nui market – especially on Saturday mornings with locally-grown produce and handmade crafts is 1km away and a little further along is the centre of town, the tourist information centre, and all the shops and restaurants anyone could want! The Avatiu wharf, situated next to the market, is the best place to find a game-fishing charter and have the opportunity to catch tuna, swordfish, marlin, and other pelagic species.

All around the island there are cafes, restaurants, bars, night markets, and several places, including resort hotels, to hire water sports equipment. Deserted beaches can be found for picnics, beach lazing, great snorkelling, and swimming. There are also opportunities to dive outside the lagoon or learn to dive with any scuba-diving operator.
